Art on the High Street

I had some spare time at the weekend to visit two art galleries in Godalming. It was not driven by the need to buy anything, or because I particularly knew any of the artists, simply that I hadn't been in for a while.

Moth Box, Mary Sumner, acrylic on board, £700
In her thoughts, Emma Franks, oil on canvas, £1450
At McAllister Thomas, the Franks, Sumner, Munson exhibition is changing this week, so be quick if you want to catch the last of the delightful Mary Sumner paintings. I thought Moth Box was fabulous, colourful and engaging, although my husband felt that the cat was a bit sinister!

Emma Franks' delicate grey female paintings were beautifully painted, some very large and would perhaps appeal to those with big white space to hang, and this is my pick.

Sue Munson's landscapes capture the feeling of bleakness and weather. In this painting, the sheep in the foreground are the focus, against the landscape, and I enjoyed the use of colour in this piece.

Kelling sheep, Sue Munson, acrylic on board, £395

St Michaels Mount, Simeon Stafford, oil on canvas, SOLD
McAllister Thomas will be hanging Seascapes for the new exhibition next weekend.

We were also fortunate to see a few of Simeon Stafford's pieces set aside for the Chelsea Art Fair. In particular, his unmissable St Michaels Mount series. This piece is sold but look out for more like this.

Arkengarthdale VI, Relton Marine,
£ 2500
Amazon parrot, Paul Harvey
We then moved on to The Wey Gallery, a lovely open space and sprung floor. Along with the usual Sue Bartlett flower paintings, we were also impressed with the Paul Harvey sculptures and Relton Marine Yorkshire scenes.
Fantasy Flowers, Sue Bartlett,  £1350

Art is alive and well in Godalming. We didn't have time to go into the Godalming Museum but the Arts and Crafts gallery is always worth a visit.
