I grew up at the seaside in South Africa. I was taught about the waves by the female powerhouses in my family - my wonderful grandmother, my inspirational aunts and my darling mother. So many happy hours spent jumping in the waves - over, under, or through, as the waves broke over my head, rolling down my body on their way to the shore.

Those happy childhood days gave me wave-confidence, and today I look forward to trips to the seaside, even wearing a wetsuit so I don't miss out at the British seaside.
We were in Wales a couple of weeks ago. That first jump into the waves brought back all those memories. The stresses washed away, the joy in my body. I felt so close to my late mother and grandmother. A shared experience over many years, the feeling never goes away.
These positive women, who always put me first, for whom family life was everything, taught me such a simple skill, which I still treasure. Watch for the next wave, keep your wits about you, and above all - get your timing right.
In life, as in the waves.
